Q: An onlay:
A. Covers the entire chewing surface of a tooth
B. Lies within a cusp of the tooth
C. Covers one or more cusp tip(s)
D. Is bonded to the facial surface of anteriors to improve appearance
Dental restorations can be divided into direct and indirect restorations.
- Direct restoration: the material is placed directly onto a prepared tooth. The placement of the temporary or permanent restorations can be done during one appointment.
- Indirect restoration: the restoration is placed after it is fabricated in the lab. The placement of the material takes more than one appointment.
- Crown: covers the entire chewing surface of a tooth.
- Inlay: lies within the cusp of the tooth.
- Onlay: covers one or more cusp tip(s).
- Veneer: cosmetic facing that is bonded to the facial surface of anteriors to improve appearance, usually made of porcelain.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): outer layer of porcelain bonded to inner alloy casting.
Answer: (C). Covers one or more cusp tip(s)
As the word implies, an “INlay” is “INside” a tooth cusp.
